English Language Training

In cooperation with Mountain State University

English Language Training in cooperation with Mountain State University offers intensive English study to students who do not meet the English language requirement for flight courses. English Language Training (ELT) students explore English in a supportive and open learning environment where they can experience language learning through books, movies, class field trips, academic writing, and other assignments. Students learn skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, as well as grammar, pronunciation, and American culture.

Learning a second language is difficult and requires dedication and commitment on the part of the student. ELT’s intensive learning approach requires at least 20 hours in the classroom each week. Some students take more than one semester of ELT study to gain enough English writing and speaking proficiency for aviation courses.

The primary goal of English Language Training is for the student to be prepared for his or her program of aviation studies. Currently, the University requires that international students score 61 (TOEFL) or 5.5 (IELTS) to meet the minimum proficiency to study in their academic program of choice.

Each student is assessed upon arrival and placed in one of two classes. The first class builds basic skills and is for students with limited understanding of spoken or written English. The second class, for students who have a more advanced level of English understanding, focuses on developing the skills needed to be successful in their aviation courses. Students participating in the English Language Training may earn up to six hours of college level credits.
